Anticaking Agents

The storage and handling of materials in bulk has elicited unique problems pertaining to cake formation and/or dust formation. In the fertilizer industry, this problem has elevated to a vast scale that not only causes waste and cost issues but also has several potential environmental, safety, and health hazards associated with it. Dust particles of the several kinds of fertilizers are usually small and light enough to be transported even by weak air currents. Some of the key reasons for caking in fertilizers are:
1.    Fertilizer Granules:
Small granules are more easily to cake than large ones. If the granules of fertilizer are not uniform, or there are too many small particles, or the shape is not so round, then the particle strength is low, the granules are prone to efflorescence or deformation under high pressure. The fine power largely reduces the contact area, and causes caking.
2.    Packing Temperature and Storage Temperature:
If the environment temperature during storage is too high, the critical relative humidity of compound fertilizer will decrease and the fertilizer is easy to cake.
If packing and keeping the fertilizer in storage while the dried granules are not fully cooled, especially when the storage temperature is high, the internal water of fertilizer will evaporate again. The hygroscopicity of the fertilizer causes the vapor around the granules/prills to condense immediately upon contact with the particles.
